Presidential candidates in Brazil have started to show solidarity after the attempted assassination of Argentina’s Vice President Cristina Kirchner since yesterday. A Brazilian was suspected of pulling the trigger of an unfired gun in violation of policy. Brazilian Prime Minister Carlos França denied the attack, but President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) did not comment on the case.

A historic ally of Kirchner, former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), wrote that the vice president of Argentina was the victim of a “criminal fascist”. “May the author suffer all legal consequences. This violence and political hatred fueled by some is a threat to democracy in our region. Democrats of the world will not tolerate any violence in political disputes.”

At the same time, presidential candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT) said there was almost no “blood rain”.

According to media information from the Federal Police, Fernando Sabag Montiel, a 35-year-old Brazilian, was carrying an Argentine-made Bersa 380, 32-caliber, five-round gun.

“Political violence in Brazil, political violence in Argentina. We must put an end to all this,” he wrote on social media.
MDB presidential candidate Simone Tebet.

The União Brasil representative in the dispute, Soraya Thronique, regretted the assassination attempt and returned to talk about strengthening security, a debate that arose during the first presidential debate in the Bando.

“I’m not exaggerating when I talk about strengthening security. We can’t underestimate what hate can do. I wore a bulletproof vest in the 2018 campaign and I’m ending this fifth day with regret for the attack on vice president Cristina Kirchner. Argentina. God bless us,” he said.

Leo Pericles, the presidential candidate of the People’s Union (UP), also expressed his solidarity with Cristina Kirchner. “We must follow the reaction of the Argentine people to stop this fascist escalation that does not respect the law and democracy.”

The Brazilian Foreign Minister described the assassination attempt as an “unjust act”. “I believe this is an act that is unfair and deserves rigorous investigation. And of course we reject the political intolerance that the President was also a victim of in 2018.”

Kirchner attacker arrested

When the author of the attempted assault was caught, he tried to escape, but was caught by his shirt amid the crowd gathered near the building where the former president lived in the Recoleta district of Buenos Aires.

The man was arrested and taken to a police station in the city of Buenos Aires, where he is still being held late last night. He is expected to make an announcement today.

According to police sources, he would have already been arrested by the City Police in March 2021 while carrying a knife.

Montiel would have arrived in Argentina in 1996 as a child. According to police information gathered from Montiel’s social networks, he has tattoos with Nazi symbols and he identifies himself as Fernando ‘Salim’ Montiel. He was a follower of groups such as ‘evil communism’, ‘linked to radicalism and hatred’, among others, as described on the portal of the Buenos Aires newspaper La Nación.
