A video posted on Instagram shows the rare moment when a group of fishermen managed to catch an Atlantic mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) – the fastest shark in the world – off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States. The animal, struggling not to be caught, is caught by jumping into the water 20 meters from the stern of the boat. Seconds later, another large mako shark appears in the air right next to the boat and crashes into the deck.
The animal bumps into a fisherman, who initially appears to be trapped with his fishing line attached to a support belt. Another man in the video throws himself backwards with the shark on his feet, then frees himself and climbs a ladder, seeking safety.
When shooting is over, the shark is left to squirm and flutter between seats. No one on board was injured, according to reports, but it’s unclear what happened to the shark.
To protect species at risk for survival on the east coast of the US, a new US federal law requires fishermen to throw sharks back into the water.
However, its size alone will make it difficult for the crew to pull it over, even if its sharp teeth are not in danger. Mako sharks grow up to 4.45 meters and can weigh over 500 kilograms.
The so-called “sea cheetahs”, members of this species, are famous for reaching 74 kilometers per hour over short distances. It is found in tropical and warm seas around the world, reaching a depth of almost 900 meters. It is usually found in ocean waters, between the surface and 150 meters deep.
The mako shark has no natural predators, but due to its skin being appreciated and often accidentally caught with other fish, it is classified as endangered worldwide after being extensively hunted as a delicacy.
