The Russian military is reportedly trying to round up the homeless in St Petersburg to support troops fighting in Ukraine. They would also be called upon to fight prisoners and ex-soldiers fired for indiscipline or crime.
Officials at the Nochlezhka charity said the soldiers went to shelters for the homeless in a central part of the city, according to The Telegraph’s website.
A recruiter came and asked him to hand out flyers for enlistment. Petersburg-based news agency Rotunda, broadcast on the social media channel Telegram, said that the man in charge of the bunker did not let the soldier in.
The Kremlin ordered the formation of so-called volunteer battalions to fight in the war against the Ukrainians in all regions of Russia. However, so far, the program has shown low commitment. The maximum age for military service has increased to 59.
Also, according to The Telegraph, the Russian military also relies on the Wagner mercenary group on the Ukrainian frontline. Wagner launched a public recruitment campaign and also in Russian prisons.
The Rotunda also reported that Russian soldiers have been instructed to consider former soldiers fired for indiscipline or crime.
