The Argentine government is working with the thesis that the attack on Argentina’s vice-president Cristina Kirchner on Thursday was carried out by a “lone wolf” and considers this hypothesis to be the main line of inquiry to shed light on the case. “Everything points to that,” Agustín Rossi, head of the AFI (Federal Intelligence Agency), said in an interview with a radio show last night.

“Everything suggests we’re dealing with a lone wolf,” Rossi said. However, he does not rule out that the developments in the investigations may still point to a different path and therefore “wait”.

Politicians ‘relaxed’ security. During the interview, the head of Argentine intelligence said that politicians in the country are “relaxing security operations” at public events to “make more contact with people”.

Maybe from now on, the main leaders of the country, both in power and in the opposition, will have to see the security operation and take more measures, and that should be the case from now on.” Rossi.

The suspect’s cell phone was drained. According to the information received from La Nación newspaper, the mobile phone of Brazilian Fernando Andrés Sabag Montiel, who was identified as the main suspect in the attack, was emptied by PFA (Argentine Federal Police) teams in order to unlock the device and collect information from the device.

After failing, the cell phone would be forwarded to the PSA (Airport Security Police), who said it had computer programs that could collect the information on the device. According to La Nación, the phone was shipped in a sealed envelope, but after opening the package and examining the cell phone, PSA determined that the phone was empty.

This morning, two PSA technicians who took the cell phone are expected to testify as witnesses as part of the investigation into the attack on Kirchner.

According to a source involved in the investigation, the only information collected so far from Montiel’s cell phone were phone links and photographs, but a laptop computer at his home was also examined.

Authorities will analyze this information to confirm that he actually acted alone and where he was hours before attempting to kill Kirchner.
