Kenya’s Supreme Court confirmed this Monday (5) William Ruto’s victory in the August 9 presidential election, which his rival Raila Odinga contested on allegations of fraud.
Supreme Court Justice Martha Koome said, “The decision was unanimous. Appeals were dismissed and therefore we declare Kenya’s first candidate (William Ruto) elected president.” said.
Odinga, the opposition candidate and backed by former president Uhuru Kenyatta during the election, contested the results, announced by the electoral commission (IEBC) on August 15, which he said were “nonsense”.
In one of the country’s most controversial elections in recent years, he outstripped current vice president Willian Ruto by nearly 233,000 votes (50.49% versus 48.85 percent), according to the data.
William Ruto accused his opponent of trying to “get a second chance with a new election enforced by justice”.
Since 2002, all presidential elections in Kenya have been contested, and in some cases have led to violence. In 2007, civil conflicts caused more than 1,100 deaths.
The August 9 elections this year took place normally, but the following week the announcement of the results was chaotic.
Shortly before the announcement, four of the seven members of the electoral commission walked away from the results, accusing the head of the body, Wafula Chebukati, of “incomprehensible” administration.
