Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he hopes new British Prime Minister Liz Truss will help Ukraine “stop Russia’s destructive efforts”. The Ukrainian president also said he “expects” to cooperate with the UK’s new leader – one of Kiev’s main support countries in Europe.
“I look forward to collaborating with the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss. We know her well in Ukraine: she has always been on the right side of European politics,” he said.
The foreign minister was named as the new prime minister, replacing Boris Johnson, who resigned in early July. Liz Truss will be the third woman to hold the position. Before that, Theresa May (2016-2019) and Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990) passed their posts.
The MP was chosen by Conservative Party members who voted across the UK. He competed for the seat with former finance minister Rishi Sunak.
Boris Johnson has been to Ukraine three times since the start of the Russian invasion. His last visit to Kiev was a surprise visit on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day. On this occasion, Zelensky presented him with the “Order of Freedom”, the highest Ukrainian honor that can be awarded to a foreigner.
