The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell on Monday classified the Russian authorities as a “fascist regime”.

According to Europa Press, the statement was made during a virtual talk at the Inter-Parliamentary Conference in Prague on the response to Ukraine’s aggression.

“We have no concrete plans to defeat the Russian fascist regime, but my task is to help Ukraine in a united way, in addition to ongoing negotiations with international actors for the implementation of more modest and accepted sanctions,” Borrell said.

The Russian military offensive launched on February 24 was justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “seaize” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, but was condemned by the international community.

In his speech, the head of EU diplomacy also warned about the reduction of arms and ammunition deliveries to Ukraine and the reduction of the arsenals of the bloc member states to respond to the Russian invasion, and called for greater coordination.

“I wouldn’t say the military reserves of many Member States are depleted, but they have drastically decreased because we have provided so much capacity. [militar] To the Ukrainians,” Borrell said, emphasizing that change is necessary and that “the best and cheapest way is to do it together.”

“Borrell completely removed himself as a diplomat by describing Russia as a fascist regime,” Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian agency Tass after the criticisms of the EU administrator. Of course, none of his statements about Russia or relations with Russia will be valid from now on,” he said.
