A mixed-race mother was surprised who gave birth to twins with different skin colors in Nottingham, England, in April. According to the British tabloid Daily Mail, 29-year-old nurse Chantelle Broughton is married to Ashton, 29, who is the mother of Ayon and Azirah and is half Jamaican and half Scottish.
Chantelle gave birth to a fair-skinned and green-eyed son, Ayon, and a darker skinned and brown-eyed Azirah. She reported that the twins did not look very different at birth, but as the weeks passed, the difference in her daughter’s skin color became more pronounced. “Azirah was a little darker when she was born. Now, as the weeks go by, she’s gotten to a point where she’s darker than her father.”
The mother, who calls herself white and has a Nigerian grandparent, said the children had “opposite” personalities but got along well. “Azirah is relaxed and Ayon wants a lot more attention. She always wants to be pampered and chatters all the time. Azirah doesn’t do that very often. But now I realize they’re actually looking at each other and she’s smiling more.”
The word the nurse uses to describe the family is “unique”. “I’m so happy they’re emerging as our unique little family. Every few weeks, friends and family say they still can’t believe it.”
Children attract the attention of the minister and are even praised. ayon and azrahalso some jokes, like their separated parents.
When you have a stroller, people already seem to notice it more. People stop and say, ‘My God, they look completely different. People ask ‘are they both yours?’ I heard you ask.
