Bolsonaro congratulates Liz Truss: ‘We share our appreciation for freedom’

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) congratulated Liz Truss on her victory as the UK’s new prime minister and said the two countries “share an appreciation for sovereignty and freedom”. The third woman to hold the post, aged 47, will replace Boris Johnson, who resigned in early July.

“Our people share an appreciation for sovereignty and freedom and can achieve much through cooperation,” he said on Twitter.

Bolsonaro also said he and the Brazilian government were “ready to work” with the British prime minister and government. The president said he hopes to strengthen relations between the two countries “to build an increasingly solid partnership, with an emphasis on the defense of economy, trade and democracy.”

“Make sure my government and I are ready to work with you and your governments to strengthen our relations and build an increasingly solid partnership with an emphasis on the defense of economy, trade and democracy,” he wrote on Twitter.

Liz Truss was named Conservative Party leader Monday in a dispute with former finance minister Rishi Sunak. The country’s former foreign minister received 81,326 votes, while Sunak received 60,399 votes.

The Prime Minister has a history of controversial speeches. Liz Truss has made some controversial statements throughout her political career. Controversial quotes include statements about British productivity, cheese imports, and the country’s economic policy. Statements were also made about Nicola Sturgeon, the leaders of France, Emmanuel Macron and Scotland.

Liz Truss thanks Boris Johnson in victory speech. The new leader of the Conservative Party thanked his predecessor for being able to complete Brexit – the process of leaving the UK from the European Union – for guiding the British through the covid-19 epidemic and “confronting Vladimir Putin”. The minister described himself as a strong critic of the Russian president regarding the war in Ukraine.

Boris Johnson faced scandals until he left his post. Yesterday, Johnson made a post on social media thanking him for three years as head of the British government. He then asked the party to support the new leader “100%”.

The current former prime minister announced his resignation in July after an intense crisis in the government that caused more than 50 members of the government, including ministers, secretaries and aides, to leave their posts over alleged “lack of confidence” in his administration.
