US President Joe Biden spoke by phone with Liz Truss on Tuesday, congratulating her on becoming Britain’s new prime minister, and vowing to strengthen ties as the two leaders unite against Russia.
“I look forward to deepening the special relationship between our countries and working together on global challenges, including continued support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression,” Biden said on Twitter.
The two leaders, who spoke by phone Tuesday afternoon, could meet at the UN General Assembly in late September.
In the statement made by the Prime Minister’s Office, it was stated that the deepening of cooperation with NATO and the US-Australia-UK security agreement, which was established last year in response to China, were discussed. In the British statement, Truss said he looks forward to “working closely with President Biden as leaders of free democracies to overcome common challenges, particularly the extreme economic problems posed by Putin’s war.”
Truss won a race for Conservative Party leadership on Monday and took over as prime minister on Tuesday as Britain faces its toughest challenges in decades.
Also Tuesday, President Jair Bolsonaro congratulated Truss on his election via a Twitter post, noting that the two countries “could achieve much through cooperation”.
“Make sure my government and I are ready to work with you and your government to strengthen our relations and build an increasingly solid partnership with an emphasis on the defense of economy, trade and democracy,” Bolsonaro said. The Brazilian’s greetings come shortly after the prime minister is sworn in, as opposed to, for example, the delay in congratulating the current president of the United States when he is elected.
