A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said: “After a thorough assessment this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remain under medical supervision. The Queen remains comfortable and remains at Balmoral.”

The situation is considered unusual and there are several indications of the seriousness of the Queen’s state of health, most notably a call by the British royal family to travel to meet the monarch.

However, most British and other supporters head to Buckingham Palace in London – the Queen’s official residence.

“Everybody’s been so stressed about this, we’ve been living for 70 years so we have to digest everything because it suddenly happened,” said Sharon Gove, a London resident outside of Buckingham Palace.

The thoughts of 60-year-old American tourist Lupe Garcia were also with her family. “Well, I find it very sad, I hope he recovers quickly. I believe everyone loves and respects him and we want the best for him and his family,” she said.

Some well-wishers retreated to the palace to be there after the news that the queen was sick.

While others carried flowers, most simply spied on what was going on inside the doors. For unclear reasons, traditional changing of the guard ceremonies at the palace – a tourist attraction in itself – were suspended for the day.
