Australian police believe the 77-year-old man, who was killed after a kangaroo attack on a property in Redmond, has kept the animal at home as a pet since he was a puppy. According to local media, the animal killed by the authorities was about three years old.

The event recorded in Australia was the first human death from an attack by such an animal in 85 years. The case raised awareness of the risks of trying to domesticate the wild marsupial.

In an interview with Australian ABC, family members of Peter Eades confirmed that he is an animal lover and has cared for the kangaroo since he was a puppy.

Eades also owned an alpaca farm, which he opened in 1997 and tended to a herd of 60 animals.

Peter Eades had a cemetery for alpacas he kept on the grounds. In an interview with ABC in 2017, he stated that when he died, he wanted to be buried next to his favorite alpaca, Claudia.

In an interview with News Australia, Reptile Park Australia wildlife expert Hayley Shute said the accident showed the importance of respecting wild animals and always remembers how dangerous kangaroos can be, especially if they are male.

“People tend to see kangaroos as cute. It’s important to know that they are wild animals and that there is a level of respect you should have when dealing with them,” he said. According to him, the traditional image of Australia’s kangaroo refers to females carrying their young in their pouches.

“Some of the lives and hierarchies of male kangaroos begin to dominate the larger male when they are in the herd. Being an alpha male has a challenge. It’s part of the life and behavior of male kangaroos,” said the expert, “of a species animal killing a human.” It’s not surprising,” he said.

Peter Eades was found seriously injured by family members at his home in Redmond, about 400 kilometers south of Perth, on Monday (12).

The family sought help, but the man’s pet kangaroo did not allow rescuers to approach the injured old man, so they had to call the police.

The animal, which caused injury to the elderly, was shot by the police. The man died where he was wounded.

The eastern gray kangaroo is the dominant species in the area where the man was killed. Animals can reach 54 kilos and can reach up to 1.3 meters in length.
