Russian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Chinese Presidents Xi Jinping will meet on Thursday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on the sidelines of a summit with other leaders in the region, seen as a counterweight to Western global influence.

Leaders of India, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran and other countries will also attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting held at this former Silk Road stop from Thursday to Friday.

The main meeting will be held on Friday, but the most interesting event is the meeting of the leaders of Russia and China.

For Putin, the summit is an opportunity to show that Russia cannot be isolated internationally, despite the invasion of Ukraine, where his troops suffered significant military defeats.

On his first overseas trip since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Xi will be able to establish his reputation as a global leader ahead of the big Communist Party congress in October, where he will run for a third term.

And for both, the summit is an opportunity to challenge the West, particularly the United States, which has led the way in imposing sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war and angered China with its displays of support for Taiwan.

“The SCO offers a real alternative to Western-based institutions,” Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said this week. Said.

“All SCO members are in favor of a just world order,” he added.
