Mr Douglas Garcia,

I had no clue who you were. But I soon realized that you chose to exist politically through violence. This worries me. But I wasn’t surprised as his demeanor was consistent with his strategy of resorting to hate for action.

In a country bled with 80,000 robberies in the first half of 2022 in the city of São Paulo alone, the buildup of another layer of violence, now political, magnifies the tragedy of a society that bury its citizens without tears, doing nothing. I do the same, I grieve and without question.

The violence that you turned into an election telegram is not limited to a clash with a journalist this week. In fact, according to Reporters Without Borders, 2.8 million attacks were carried out against the media in the first month of the election campaign alone. There were 26,000 against Vera Magalhães alone.

With your cell phone in hand (for a few minutes at least), it wasn’t about questioning the professional you wanted. It’s about turning intimidation into votes.

However, this gesture is not limited to the gesture of that day. In fact, it is just the beginning of a larger process. Like attack dogs, soldiers of this movement wait for the whistle and the order to “attack” for inhuman attacks.

The violence you propose, calculated to unleash hatred, is the destruction of democracy. Unbearable, unacceptable and criminal.

Such a strategy is part of an authoritarian movement based on ideological fanaticism and backed by lies. You and I both know this.

Finally, your gesture confirms my observation: We won’t be choosing who will be president in two weeks. Let’s decide who we are. A society of armed Christians, doctors attacking science, lawyers questioning the rule of law, and journalists who are the tools of lies?

The polls will reveal what society we have in Brazil today, its tolerance for racism, misogyny and violence. Pots that turn into mirrors for a few magical moments. And like any mirror, there is no way to choose that only a particular facet of the image is projected when placed in front of it.

It would be useless to say later that you voted for authoritarian movements because of the promise of economic liberalism, the reduction of bureaucracy, or the defense of the family.

Military oversight or not, paper or electronic, this mirror will show everything in that booth where the citizen makes his decision. A transparent mirror of what the conscience of each of them consists of.

Democratic greetings,

jamil
