Horror, anger, and even shame. These are Jair Bolsonaro’s Queen. They were some of the words used by foreign diplomats when describing their behavior on their way to London for Elisabeth’s funeral.
Sources in European prime ministers said the presence of more than 500 presidents, international leaders and government representatives would be marked by sobriety. But instead, Bolsonaro decided to turn his first day into an election campaign.
His speech on the balcony of the Brazilian embassy, contradicting even the polls and claiming to win the elections in the first round, was met with disdain and incomprehensibility.
Although London knew that the country was going through an election period, it expected a certain protocol from the Brazilians in the face of mourning.
Brazilian diplomats confirmed that there was no clear advice on the behavior of each leader. But they admitted they hoped none of them would use the funeral to seek votes or gather supporters. There will be no room for negotiations between the representatives coming to the British capital.
However, Bolsonaro used his speech to criticize the positions of the progressive wings and spoke of drug trafficking, abortion and sex.
For the negotiators, Bolsonaro’s passage through Europe deepens the discomfort and disdain for his government in the Old Continent. Except for countries led by the far-right, the Brazilian was not accepted by any of the heads of government of the main democracies in Europe during his tenure.
Demands were not lacking from Itamaraty, who last year consulted with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson to find out if London would welcome Bolsonaro. The British maintained an awkward silence.
