Pope Francis said on Wednesday it was “crazy” to consider using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, while Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West was not bluffing about the possibility of using nuclear weapons.
Francis also noted that the Ukrainians were subjected to brutality, atrocities and torture, describing them as a “noble” people who were martyred.
Speaking to a crowd in front of a general audience in St. Peter’s Square last week about his visit to Kazakhstan, the Pope praised the Central Asian country for giving up nuclear weapons after gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
“That was brave. In this tragic war, which some are thinking about nuclear weapons, which is crazy, this country has said ‘no’ to nuclear weapons from the beginning,” Francis said.
Putin ordered Russia’s first military deployment since WWII and supported his plan to annex parts of Ukraine and warned the West that he wasn’t bluffing when he said he was ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia.
Francis, who did not name Russia or Putin, told the crowd about a conversation he had with Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the head of a charity providing aid in Ukraine, on Tuesday.
“(Krajewski) told me about the suffering of these people, their brutal acts, their atrocities, the tortured bodies they found. Let’s join these noble and martyred people,” he said.
