President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was greeted with a series of protests at UN (United Nations) headquarters in New York. The Brazilian opens the United Nations General Assembly today with a speech that also promises to be an election campaign act.
During the night, the UN building was illuminated by mega projection with a picture of the Brazilian president and words like “Brazilian shame”, “disgrace” and “liar”. The terms were devised in Portuguese and English, and the action was carried out anonymously. Hours later, the US Democracy Network in Brazil took the initiative with dozens of organizations, universities and academics.
Faced with strong international criticism, Bolsonaro will encounter other protesters in the city throughout the day, although he has also organized his own caravans of supporters. In his first year in government, the Brazilian had to cancel a trip to the North American city after the local mayor at the time made it clear that he was not welcome.
For Tuesday’s events, the Brazilian president will still hold talks with leaders of the world’s far-right and ultra-conservative governments.
Before Bolsonaro’s speech, the UN meeting will be opened by the party’s secretary-general, Antônio Guterres. It promises to send messages that might not please leaders like the Brazilian.
“The solidarity provided in the United Nations Charter is being destroyed by the acids of nationalism and self-interest,” the Portuguese said last week, guessing at part of his message.
According to him, this international solidarity is undermined by “a shocking disdain for the poorest and most vulnerable in our world, politicians using people’s worst instincts for partisan gain, prejudice, discrimination, disinformation, and hate speech that pits people against each other”.
