North Korea denied on Wednesday that it was supplying weapons to Russia, as the United States had claimed weeks ago, state media reported.
“We have never exported weapons or ammunition to Russia before, and we do not plan to export them,” an official from the Defense Ministry’s General Equipment Office told state news agency KCNA.
The statement responded to White House accusations that Moscow is preparing to buy artillery shells and rockets from Pyongyang to replenish its resources depleted by the war in Ukraine.
“Our feeling is that it could contain literally millions of shells, rockets and artillery shells,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
However, referring to declassified American information, Kirby added that the acquisitions are not yet complete.
In a statement, Pyongyang accused Washington and “other enemy forces” of spreading a “rumor of arms deals” between Russia and North Korea, which is short for North Korea’s official name.
Defending North Korea’s right to export military equipment, the text added, “We warn the United States to stop making wild comments.”
