G7 foreign ministers will adopt new sanctions against Russia following President Vladimir Putin’s decision to mobilize reserves for the war in Ukraine.
G7 diplomatic chiefs “criticized Russia’s deliberate steps to escalate[the conflict]including partial mobilization of reserve forces and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” said the G7 diplomatic chiefs.
After their meeting during the UN General Assembly, the ministers said the G7 would “accept more targeted sanctions and is committed to continued economic and political pressure against Russia”.
“We will examine and adopt new restrictive measures, both personal and sectoral,” said Josep Borrell, chief of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), who attended the meeting. said.
Ministers from Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as the EU, denounced plans to hold “false referendums on sovereign Ukrainian territory”.
“Voting cannot be free or fair as long as there are Russian forces,” they added.
They reiterated a commitment announced earlier this month to “complete the plans” and impose a price cap on Russian oil.
They also called on Russia to return control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been the target of attacks in recent weeks, to Ukraine.
