Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has dropped 14 places in the list of the world’s richest people, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He is currently the 20th richest person with a combined net worth of $55.3 billion, up from $70.2 billion on Monday due to the sharp drop in Meta’s share price.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft creator Bill Gates are among the five richest people in the world. Musk at the top of the list lost $2.55 billion last year, while Bezos (third) lost $44.4 billion. Gates (fifth) lost $26.2 billion.
Technology stock prices took a hit last year due to the economic downturn. The paper wealth of many big techs is linked to the huge stakes they still own in the companies they founded.
Zuckerberg’s fortune peaked in September 2021 with nearly $140 billion. A month later, he announced the rebranding of Facebook to Meta to emphasize his shift of focus to the “metaverse”, augmented and virtual, a kind of digital world. Meanwhile, his wealth began to decline.
Meta shares fell nearly 23% in February after unexpected spending in its “metaverse” led to a drop in fourth-quarter profits and a lower-than-expected revenue outlook amid heightened competition with TikTok.
In July, Meta reported its first quarterly revenue decline from the previous year, after reporting the first drop in daily Facebook users.
In his nearly three-hour appearance at the Joe Rogan Experience in August, Zuckerberg said he thinks the metaverse will likely be “much healthier” for people, reiterating his belief that this is the internet’s next generation.
“My goal for this next batch of platforms is that they’re going to be more immersive and hopefully more useful — but I don’t want people to spend more time with computers,” said Rogan. “I want people to spend better time with screens.”
