A US aircraft carrier docked in South Korea on Friday for the first time in nearly five years, as a show of strength in the face of North Korean weapons tests.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and ships from the strike fleet docked in the southern port of Busan as part of Seoul and Washington’s plan to have more US presence in the area.
“The presence of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in Busan demonstrates the strength of the alliance between South Korea and the United States,” a source from South Korea’s Ministry of Defense told AFP.
He added that the visit was aimed at “deterring North Korea’s missile threats and nuclear threat.”
Pyongyang officials have conducted several weapons tests since the beginning of the year, and this month passed a law authorizing a preemptive nuclear strike in the face of a threat to the country.
American ships anchored in Busan are expected to participate in joint operations with the South Korean army on the east coast of the country, which will include the nuclear-powered submarine USS Annapolis.
