The governor of the Kharkiv region announced on Friday that Ukrainian authorities had unearthed 436 bodies buried in a forest near the Ukrainian city of Izium, 30 of which had “signs of torture”.
“A total of 436 bodies were exhumed. Most of them have violent deaths and 30 have traces of torture,” Oleg Sinegubov told Telegram.
“There are corpses around them tied with rope, with their hands tied, with broken limbs or with gunshot wounds. Several men have their genitals amputated,” Sinegubov said.
Evidence of the ‘terrible torture’ suffered by the population
In mid-September, several hundred graves and a mass grave were discovered near the town of Izium, which had been under Russian occupation for several months and was retaken by Kievan forces.
Ukrainian police said they had discovered “torture rooms” in the area, including at Izium.
Russian forces are accused of multiple abuses in areas under their control in Ukraine, particularly in Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev, where civilian bodies have been found on the streets after they withdrew from the area in late March.
Moscow denies committing these crimes and describes the discovery of the tombs at Izium as a “lie”.
