National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said today that the United States will respond decisively to any use of nuclear weapons by Russia against Ukraine and has announced the “catastrophic consequences” it will face to Moscow.

The comments are the latest American warning after the veiled nuclear threat by Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, when the Russian President announced his country’s first military deployment since World War II.

“If Russia crosses that line, it will have disastrous consequences for them. The United States will respond decisively,” Sullivan told NBC.

Sullivan did not disclose the nature of the planned intervention, but said the United States explained to Moscow “in more detail what exactly this means”. Sullivan said the country is in frequent and direct contact with Russia.

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden accused Putin of making “clear nuclear threats to Europe” without regard for his nonproliferation responsibilities.

Russia is holding referendums in all four regions of eastern Ukraine to annex the territories it seized during the invasion it launched in February. Ukraine and its allies described the referendums as nonsense designed to justify an escalation of the war.

After setbacks on the battlefield, Putin mobilizes 300,000 soldiers and threatens to use “all possible means” to protect Russia.

“This is not a bluff,” Putin said in comments seen as a threat to the potential use of nuclear weapons on the world stage.
