The aerobatic show ended with the deaths of two pilots as a result of the planes colliding in the air in Gera, Germany. According to the local Bild newspaper, 42-year-old Michael S. and 72-year-old Dieter G. died instantly.
In the collision, the two planes stuck together and then crashed. The impact occurred during a so-called “mirror flight” training, in which an aircraft performs similar maneuvers in parallel reverse flight.
The German newspaper reported that the pilots had been flying in joint formations for 16 years. They won the world championship in vintage stunts in 2019.
A video is shown as the planes slowly begin to fall. Both ended up behind a series of trees near the residences. Then the smoke created by the explosions starts to rise.
Two wrecks were removed from the plane, which was still burning in an area near Thränitz.
“So far there is no evidence of a technical defect. We noticed signs of deformation in the wings that indicated a major collision,” plane crash expert Norman Kretschmer told Bild.
