Alert in Peru for “crying dolls” that can affect the reproductive system

The Ministry of Health of Peru warned this Friday that some toys have called “Cry Babies” may affect the reproductive system due to the presence in toys of the substance bisphthalate, which exceeds the established levels.

“We know about a batch of toys ‘which could affect children’s healthcausing harm to their reproductive system due to the presence of the substance bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at levels exceeding the permissible limits,” the ministry announced in a statement.

It notes that the alert was issued by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and published by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi).

The General Directorate for Environmental Health and Food Safety (Digesa) has launched health surveillance actions in the various toy marketing establishments and, according to the ministry, products with characteristics similar to the toys reported by the OECD have been found.

“Samples were taken for technical analysis to ensure that their use does not pose risks to the health of the population”, the statement specifies. Furthermore, the ministry reported that coordination is underway with the OECD and Indecopi to determine whether the alerted products correspond to the toys identified during the health tests surveillance actions, in order to establish the corresponding security measures.

To protect the population, asked the public to “check the current health authorization granted by the Digesa on the occasion of the purchase of toys”.

In case of purchase of the aforementioned toys, he urges to avoid their handling and use until their non-toxicity is verified.

According to health authorities, prolonged or repeated exposure to bisphthalate can affect the testicles of children, as animal tests show that this substance can cause toxic effects on human development or reproduction.
