Argentine Horacio Pagani presented his new creation, the Utopiaa coupe with a more classic style and with a mechanics far from electrification: it has one V12 engine It can have manual or automatic transmission.
It is the third model of the Argentine house with which it begins to cross the third decade of existence of Pagani Automobili, based in Modena, Italy.
Marketing director Christopher Pagani, son of Horacio, confirmed that the planned production has already been assigned to buyers, despite a price equivalent to $ 2.5 million, according to reports. car and driver.
“More than 4 thousand drawings, 10 scale models, a model in the wind tunnel, two 1: 1 scale models and countless ideas, research and experiments in 8 complete prototypes, for a team work that lasted more than 6 years. we put passion, commitment and sacrifice to create something timeless and cutting edge in terms of technology “, described its creator.
to the models Zonda (known during its development as C8) e Huayra (C9), this Utopia now appears, which was presented at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, and which included the participation of the Symphony Orchestra of the Conservatory of that city, which performed an opera based on three motifs conceived by Pagani himself, in the early years ’80.
As in previous vehicles, in the Utopia the focus was on aerodynamics, the use of advanced materials to achieve rigidity with low weight and the tuning of the V12 engine produced exclusively by Mercedes-AMG.
Unmistakably Pagani
Anyone who can associate a Zonda or a Huayra with the Argentine house will soon recognize the Utopia as a car of its own creation, not only for the details but also for the proportions of the vehicle.
In this case, the shapes are a bit more classic and less avant-garde than those of the Huayra, its predecessor. The line and silhouette drawn by the model appear simpler, more fluid, with fewer edges and more curved areas.
The new hypercar has very few aerodynamic add-ons compared to other similar models. But, according to the brand, it gets a aerodynamic efficiency thanks to its overall shapeobtaining greater downforce and reduced aerodynamic drag only thanks to its design.
Different sources are what inspired Pagani for different elements. For example, the projectors with projectors inspired by the Vespas of the 1950s, or the accessories of Riva sports boats.
But the key lies in the elements that, in addition to defining the car, also have a function. Forged wheels, for example, have a carbon fiber extractor in the form of a turbine that extracts hot air from the brakes and reduces turbulence under the body.
The brakes are mounted on carbon-ceramic discs (less sensitive to fatigue), and the calipers have a new design with lighter materials. The wheels, designed exclusively by Pirelli for this model, are 21 “at the front and 22” at the rear.
The rear sector is distinguished by the double “floating” headlights on each side of the rear fenders, in the center of which the quad titanium exhaust, Pagani registered trademark, which has a ceramic coating to dissipate heat. Despite this, its weight is just over 6 kilograms for the complete system.
Timeless elegance inside
Inside it is “neither modern nor retro, it is timeless,” according to the statement. There is no screen in the center console or dashboardbeyond the minimum displayed in front of the driver.
The large screens would have been easier to install and would have saved a lot of design effort, the company describes, but would have taken away much of the interior’s beauty.
All instruments are purely analog and each of the easy-to-read dials subtly reveals part of its mechanism as if it were a high-end watch. For Pagani, every component needed to run the car is an opportunity to be creative.
Aerodynamics
At Pagani they point out that for six years, from the first sketches and computer calculations to the freezing of the final shape of the carbon fiber molds, the internal air flows were refined through endless hours of research in the wind tunnel.
The active aerodynamics of the Utopia, together with the electronically controlled shock absorbers, ensure optimal dynamic behavior in all driving conditions. The double wishbone suspension, made of alloy aerospace aluminumbenefits from the extensive development work done on the Huayra R, an exclusive track version.
Pagani, pioneer in the use of carbon fiber for the construction of its vehicles, it has chosen to consolidate its existing strengths and improve the way its fibers are woven and constantly invent new composite materials such as Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax.
In addition, a new type of carbon fiber has been developed specifically for aesthetic applications such as bodywork, which in turn provides an additional 38% stiffness at the same density.
And just as the aerodynamics of the Utopia are based on the shapes of the car and not on the accessories, something similar happens with the safety offered by the model. This coupe has spent more than 50 severe crash testsfrom development to pre-tests and approval approval, to obtain its global certification.
a mighty heart
The Utopia engine is a 6.0-liter twin-turbo specially built by Mercedes-AMG for Pagani: it delivers 864 hp and an exceptional torque of 1,100 Nm. According to the brand, it accelerates more and is at the same time more flexible and more powerful than its predecessors, while still meeting the most stringent emissions regulations, including those in force in California. At present, the company has not disclosed performance data.
For the show “the choice was philosophical”, they argue in Pagani. A dual-clutch transmission was ruled out as heavier and “depriving the driver of the ability to set the car’s acceleration rate.”
So Pagani turned to the most prestigious manufacturer of high-performance automotive transmissions, Xtrac, to develop the fastest possible gearbox with helical gears. It has 7 gears and can be automated or “pure” manual.
Since its inception, Pagani Automobili has changed considerably. Of the 25 employees the company had in 1999, today it employs 180 people, many of them engineers specializing in different areas. And as the statement says, “the production of 50 cars a year is closer to a tailor shop than an assembly line.”
That capacity is equivalent to almost half of the planned production for the Utopia: 99 examples of this new coupe will be produced, although certainly new versions and special editions will come out later.
