BMW 2 Series Coupe
with the new BMW 2 Seriesthe German brand is once again proposing a model that enhances its historic sporting tradition to the fullest: a compact rear-wheel drive coupe with sensations that are difficult to find in current models.
BMW has always been a company linked to sportsmanship. The performance of its models and the touch that its different vehicles have conveyed to their drivers over the years are unmistakable characteristics of the Bavarian company.
But times have changed, vehicles are getting bigger and taller every day (SUVs are the biggest culprits) and electronics have a greater influence. This makes the change in sensations behind the wheel inevitable.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupé is produced in Mexico for the whole world.
But fans of the brand can rest assured because with the new 2 Series Coupe the company keep those traits alive. This new model has just been presented in our market in its sportiest configuration, despite the obstacles that exist today to bring models from abroad.
With the new 2 Series, BMW is also keeping alive a tradition that began 55 years ago with the 2002 model, that of the compact sports coupe. A legacy that continued with some generations of the 3 Series and then with the 1 Series.
Past and present in a coupe
Also this new model runs from the crack generated by new BMW designs. On the one hand, the purists reject the new shapes and proportions of the examples of the German brand, such as the last 7 Series, above all due to the dimensions acquired by the traditional tube kidneys. But on the other hand, the company’s sales continue to grow.
The extended bonnet and set-back passenger compartment of this BMW 2 Series Coupe are reminiscent of other compact coupes in the history of the brand.
This coupe somehow combines past and present. For example, there are lines that identify with current models (the triangular air intakes at the ends of the front bumper) but are performed on historical proportions, like that long nose with the cockpit sliding backwards.
In addition, the kidneys, “the” contention element of the brand’s models in recent times, are a third of the height of those of the 4 Series coupe, for example.
The center console of the BMW 2 Series Coupé is oriented towards the driver.
Series 2 has the distinction of having been designed by the Mexican José Casas and for having been produced in a Mexican factory, that of San Luis Potosí. From there it is exported all over the world, including Germany.
The configuration chosen for Argentina is the most extreme. This is the M240i, which comes with a 3.0-liter petrol engine, 387 horsepower, 8-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and an even sportier trim.
A angry little beast that promises to be a powerhouse of emotions. The selling price of this model in our market is $ 101,900.
Next to the selector lever of the BMW 2 Series Coupé is a wheel, buttons and a pad that give access to almost all functions.
Preview, Clarione He was able to get behind the wheel of this new model, albeit before it arrived in Argentina. And although it was a different version, it was a good way to have a reference of this brand new BMW.
The car looks attractive, sporty and solidly built, with proportions “out of place” in this era of SUVs and crossings. In fact, due to its characteristics, it is difficult to find a direct rival.
Inside it shows the quality expected in a BMW: good materials and good quality finishes. The driver’s seat is comfortable but, to be clarified, with a sporty posture; the legs are more extended than in a normal car or SUV, the tail closer to the ground and the steering wheel almost parallel to the driver’s chest.
The BMW 2 Series Coupe arrives in Argentina with a more powerful version of 387 horsepower and all-wheel drive.
The various controls are close at hand and helps to orient the center console towards the driver (a historic solution from the company), as it brings the touch screen closer to the hand of those behind the wheel.
In any case, next to the gear lever there is the already traditional BMW command set that combines a “wheel”, buttons and a touch pad that allows you to control practically all vehicle functions. It also offers a group of 8 hotkeys in which you can store an address for the browser or a telephone contact from a radio station.
The design of the nose of the BMW 2 Series Coupe takes up the style with large “kidneys” that the brand has shown.
The tested version had a smaller engine than what will be offered here. Either way, it was a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 258 horsepowercombined with the 8-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive, a configuration that allows it to have an almost perfect weight distribution between the front and rear axles: 50.4% forward, 49.6% rear.
The result is an extremely agile and versatile car, as it is comfortable to drive for hours but also to respond with a speed and efficiency to make you fall in love. The steering is very precise and fast and taking this coupe on winding roads is a real treat, as it is well supported in any situation.
The feeling is that, as they say in the jargon, “the chassis is advanced”. Surely the 387 horsepower of the M240i version arriving in Argentina will require something more. Although it gives us the impression that they will only increase the ability to take good driving sensations to the next level.
