The goal of joining the sustainable operations movement is one of the goals of companies to grow and continue to attract new investments. In this context, the multinational Mondelez, which produces the traditional brands of biscuits Oreo, Tita, Rhodesia and Cerealitas, among others, it has signed an agreement with Genneia, the company dedicated to the generation of renewable energy to power its two production plants, Pacheco (in the province of Buenos Aires) and Villa Mercedes, in San Luis, with clean electricity.
The supply of energy appears to be an action less complicated than accessing imported inputs which the food company needs in order not to interrupt production, as happened in one of the lines of the San Luis plant where the company produces juices, jellies and premixes. Although this drawback has been overcome, its directors hold intense meetings with officials of the Secretariat of Commerce – like many other mass consumer companies – to prevent the lack of imported products from affecting their production.
The contract for the purchase of sustainable energy provides that the Pacheco plant, where the multinational produces biscuits and alfajores, will receive 10,974 MWh per year from the Rawson, Villalonga, Pomona, Chubut Norte wind farms and the Sierras de Ullum solar park. .
In this way, according to Martín Antola, president of Mondelēz International for the Southern Cone, Genneia will provide the plants with 100% green energy for five years. And the initiative will allow the Pacheco plant “to reduce 7,416 tons of polluting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,” he estimated.
“In concrete results, Mondelez will stop emitting carbon dioxide equivalent to that absorbed by 325,000 trees. In turn,” this reduction will allow us to avoid the CO2 equivalent emitted by 9,000 cars, “the company compared.
During the first half of this year, the mass consumer company reduction of water consumption by 25% compared to the same period in 2021 and reduction of energy consumption by 3%, the equivalent of what 1,320 homes consume, its administrators commented.
This new agreement is part of the company’s global strategy to achieve its environmental impact reduction goals by 2025. Other such actions include increasing recyclable packaging and promoting “conscious snacking” habits with portions. controlled and improvement of the nutritional profile of its products.
At the same time, the signature uses the extension required to launch on the market, the adapted packaging as established by the new law on the front labeling of food which also incorporates warnings related to excess fat and sugar in products.
Regarding the agreement for the supply of clean energy to the food company, Gustavo Castagnino, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability of Genneia, commented that this company operates seven wind farms and a solar panel park. and what, cOn Mondelez, the company has 20 corporate clients. He also commented that the demand for renewable energy resources is much more important than supply, which means that the growth potential for the sector is still great. In fact, Genneia is building a new park in Tandil.
For Genneia, long-term supply contracts are one of the energy solutions available to all companies committed to sustainable development. It also allows large consumers of the system to comply with the requirements of Law 27.191, which requires that By 2025, 20% of the electricity they consume comes from renewable sources.
