Inflation reached 6.7% in March in the country, the highest in 31 years

The consumer price index continues to rise in Canada where inflation rose 6.7% last March in Canada, on an annual basis, Statistics Canada reports. This is the sharpest increase in CPI since January 1991.

Despite the Bank of Canada’s recent interventions at its core rate to slow the economy’s overheating, nothing seems to be able to stop the wave of inflation that is sweeping the country.

Last February, the inflation rate on an annual basis reached 5.7%, so it rose one percentage point a month.

According to data measured by Statistics Canada, prices rose in each of the eight major economic sectors monitored by the agency.

Energy prices were of course top of the pack with an 11.8% increase in gas prices between February and March. On an annual basis, a liter of gasoline costs 39.8% higher in March 2022 than in March 2021.

Heating oil, meanwhile, rose 19.9% between February and March to reach an annual increase of 61% compared to March 2021.

Food also did not survive by rising food prices, which rose 8.7% in March compared to the same period last year. This is the largest annual increase seen in the food sector since March 2009.

Eggs and dairy products, for example, were priced 8.5% higher in March 2002 compared to March 2021. The price of breakfast cereals rose 12.3% over the same period.
