Rising inflation brings bad news for Buenos Aires’ middle class: what that sector consumes is what gets more expensive

Last month, the prices of Restaurants and hotels they increased by an average of 11.6%, due to the increase in the rates of hotel accommodation services for tourism purposes and, to a lesser extent, in the prices of food prepared in restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Information and communication recorded an increase of 12.1%, mainly due to the increases in subscriptions to mobile phone services and group communication.

Service waterfall had an increase of 18.7% and that of gas increased by 14.6%. Transportation of passengers by air, 40.3%; Package tours, 28.8%; Insurance, 9.1% and financial services, 10.1%.

The data comes from the Department of Statistics and Censuses in Buenos Aires, which had anticipated that inflation last month was 7.3%. It has now released the details of this increase average.

With the exception of Education (+0.6%) due to the school break, all chapters had average increases between 2.3% and 11.6%.

Four sectors had double-digit increases last month. They were Information and Communication (12.1%), Restaurants and Hotels (11.6%), Transport (11.1%) and Recreation and Culture (10.6%). All these increases have a greater impact on the medium sectors.

What has been happening in recent months is that prices and tariffs for services have risen above those for goods. For example, in December services in the city increased by 6.1% and goods by 5.2%. Applying the weights, the Buenos Aires index averaged 5.8% versus 5.1% for the INDEC nationwide. A difference of plus or minus 0.7 points.

The 7.3% increase is the highest level since July last year, when it reached 7.7%. Then it fell and both in November and in December they scored 5.8%.
