the American company Teslaby tycoon Elon Musk, will install an electric car mega store in the city of Monterreyannounced the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The president said he sealed the deal on Monday after a telephone conversation with Tesla’s owner, in which the company director promised to consider water shortage issues facing the state of Nuevo León, whose capital it’s Monterrey.
“There is an agreement, there will be an investment and the Tesla factory in Mexico will be based in Monterrey with a commitment to solve the problem of water scarcity,” the Mexican president said in his usual morning press conference on Tuesday.
In this regard, he added: “I don’t want to give more details because there will be a Tesla announcement tomorrow.”
The announcement confirms that the Mexican government has finally accepted the terms proposed by the Tesla CEOElon Musk, who from the beginning planned to locate the plant in the northern state of Nuevo León, on the border with Texas
López Obrador said last week that he would not allow Tesla to establish itself in that region, arguing that it is an area suffering from a water crisis.
The Mexican president said he has reached an agreement with Musk and Tesla’s commitment to help solve the Nueva León state’s water crisis by using a water recycling system for the new plant. (HANDLE).
Tesla is going to build a vehicle factory in Monterrey, Nuevo León, but, in principle, they have ruled out battery production.
“We talked about how we could not, in the case of battery and semiconductor manufacturing, give subsidies“, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in this regard.
The US government, for example, offers a subsidy to attract this type of investment: for every peso the company invests, the government must give one peso and fifty cents.
“Mexico’s competitive advantages are unique in the world and we (Elon Musk and AMLO) agree Mexico’s main asset is the quality of its workers, ethics, responsibility, creativity of Mexican workers. This is not found in other parts of the world,” said López Obrador.
Voices for and against
“You can bring water (to Nuevo León), but not human capital”José María Garza Treviño, president of the Garza Ponce Group, told Forbes México when asked about the controversy over the possible installation of a Tesla plant in Monterrey.
And he added: “The truth is that in Nuevo León there has never been water and here we are. And I believe that there will be ways to solve the problem and people are aware of it.”
The entrepreneur also recalled that two years ago he had to experience a very serious dry cycle in the Monterrey metropolitan area.
Since then, Nuevo León authorities, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and businessmen have been working on a plan to bring water from the El Cuchillo and El Cuchillo 2 dams to the city.
