A local car industry increasingcombined with an import system increasingly restrictive is generating an unprecedented situation in local dealerships: two out of three models sold today in Argentina are of local productionaccording to patent data from the Association of Automotive Dealers of the Argentine Republic (ACARA).

The institution communicated that in February the sales of zero kilometer units (patents) amounted to 30,121 unitswith an increase of 3.5% compared to the same month of the previous year. In the first two months the accumulated sales were even 80,486 units, 10.8% more than in the same period in 2022.

Although sales numbers have increased, the owner of ACARA, Ricardo Salomehe reiterated that the underlying situation has remained the same for more than two years, with a lawsuit he calls for valuable refuge in the purchase of vehicles and an offer insufficient.

“February marks a start to the year with an acceptable two-month period, with data similar to last year’s and growing, we know that if they had had more cars available, the patents would have been higher”said the director.

Salome added: lack of other investment options as a vehicle, which also allows you to enjoy it quickly, has accelerated the purchase decision, even if we continue to face the problem of the lack of a complete offer, due to global issues and local restrictions. As the year progresses and foreign exchange liquidation can be accelerated, the release of vehicles and parts will grow, something that has become critical to accompanying this growing demand but is quickly finding limits.

The local automotive industry closed 2022 with a production of 536,893 units23.5% more than in 2021 e maximum in eight years. Although some car manufacturers allocate between 60% and 70% of their production to foreign markets, overall the local industry allocated more than 40% of what was sent in the year to local dealers.

Although some local models continue to experience significant delays (at Toyota dealerships the waiting list is approx five months), among the dealers, have ensured since the end of last year that most of the local models They normalized the delivery times.

This greater availability translates, in turn, into a greater market share, with an audience that buy what is available.

This undersupply, in turn, has its correlate in sales statistics: out of the 18 models produced by local car terminals, 49,328 units were patented this year, equal to 61.28% of sales.

Eight of ten models the best sellers between January and February are assembled in the country (see infographic).

The patent ranking is led, like last year, by the Fiat Chrono and the Peugeot 208followed by pick ups Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok. In fifth place is the toyota etiosa model imported from Brazil, followed by local vehicles Ford Ranger, Renault Kangoo II and Chevrolet Tracker (The latter began to be produced at the Rosario plant at the end of last year). The “top 10” of sales is completed by the Toyota Corolla crossoverbrazilian and the volkswagen taoproduct in general Pacheco.

Many of the other locally produced models today feature prominently in the sales chart, such as the Chevrolet Cruze (11th in the first two months), the nissan frontier (12th), the Renault Sandero (13th), Citroën Berlingo (19th), toyota sw4 (20th), Mercedes Sprinter (21) and Renault Logan (22nd).

The remainder of the two-month sales were 31,158 units (38.72% of the market), distributed among 32 models, mostly imported from Brazil and Mexico. These 32 models are joined by high-end vehicles, whose brands are grouped in the Chamber of Automotive Importers (CIDOA), with total sales of 2,923 units, a 3.6% of the total market.
