The traditional dinner for exhibitors which takes place the evening before the opening of Expoagro, met this Monday at the Hotel Colonial de San Nicolás for national and provincial authorities, exhibitors, entrepreneurs, managers of sector bodies and journalists.
Martín Schvartzman, CEO of Exponenciar, gave the first opening speech, in which he highlighted the qualities that make the fair “unique”, thanks to the presence of more than 100,000 visitors every year and its 600 exhibitors, “who come to show passion, imagination, innovation and effort”, on a 150-hectare property, in the racecourse and open-air exhibition center of the city of San Nicolás in Buenos Aires.
Given the varied presence of officials, politicians, businessmen and producers, Alberto Marina, director of Exponenciar -the company formed by Grupo Clarín and La Nación, which organizes Expoagro-, ensured that “Today we can say that there are no cracks at Expoagro, and this is a value that we have built together”.
The presence of the Minister of the Interior, Wado of Peter, with the Minister of Agriculture, Juan José Bahillo; the governor of Corrientes, Gustavo Valdesand the mayor of San Nicolás, Manuel Passaglia, Among others, they were a sample of the varied presence of pro-government supporters and opponents of the national government, who gathered at the dinner with which the organizers of Expoagro entertained the participants in the sample.
Minister De Pedro intervenes, “as an agricultural producer”. He said that “it is impossible for there to be roots without production and if the field is not good”. He said he is the fourth generation of agricultural producers of the Mercedes, province of Buenos Aires. And that they’ve never seen a drought like this one, where for the first time, “20 percent of what always comes out in the corn crop comes out.”
Wado de Pedro also recalled his trip to Israel, where they were leaders of various political forces. In this sense, he cited another trip, to which “10 Argentine provinces went, including the president of the UCR, the governor of Jujuy”, said De Pedro, underlining the inter-party agreements to get Argentina out of the crisis.
Drought measures
The presence of the governor of Santa Fe, Omar Perotti, was expected, but the episodes of violence in Rosario prevented him from going to the Expoagro dinner.
Javier Rodriguez, Minister of Agricultural Development of the province of Buenos Aires, was concerned about the drought affecting agricultural production, but highlighted the Rural Roads Plan, which has already carried out 284 works throughout the province, and the strengthening of the Rural Police , among other initiatives of the government of Buenos Aires.
Before the opening speeches, there was a cocktail party attended by political leaders of different parties, representatives of agricultural producers and businessmen, who were concerned about the drought, which is causing agricultural production to drop from a forecasted 132 million tonnes to 88 million tonnes, representing about $20 billion less in revenue.
Carlos Achetoni, president of the Argentine Agricultural Federation, underlined that this is a very difficult year, because drought and frost have caused “a loss of 40 million tons of production, which represents over 30% of the total”.
For this reason, the Minister of Agriculture, Bahillo, highlighted the measures that the government has adopted to refinance the debts of agricultural producers, new credit lines and specific programs which are “tools for producers to continue working”.
One of the most sought-after leaders was Martín Llaryora, mayor of the city of Córdoba and candidate for governor of the sector province led by Juan Schiaretti, who insisted on the need to eliminate detentions. “Argentina will move forward with more work and more investment,” Llaryora said clarion.
