December has passed, January has passed and the Government has not convened the National Commission for work in private homes should define the minimum wage for the first quarter of 2024, despite the claims of the various trade union associations that make up the Commission.
The previous meeting was held on 29 September and established the minimum salary scale for October, November and December. For example, for the month of December, the broadest category, i.e. the performance of cleaning, washing, ironing, maintenance, preparing and cooking meals and, in general, all other typical domestic activities, was set at $1,416.50 per hour and $173,758 per month for retired staff.
According to INDEC reports, the staff of Casas Particulares adds 1.7 millionbut fewer than 500,000 are registered.
According to the Association of Domestic and Allied Workers (ATHA) During 2023, staff increases were 154% against an inflation of 211.4%: this is a loss of 18.4%. Added to this is the further worsening due to inflation in the months of January, February and March, which could reach around 75%. Already January salaries saw no official increase.
For these reasons, in addition to its urgent appeal, ATHA proposes that an urgent and immediate increase be ordered of the minimum wages of the various professional categories of the activity to compensate for the effects of the recent devaluation of the national currency, the inflation of 2023 and that estimated for the months of January and February 2024.
Furthermore, taking into account the increase in public passenger transport fares, they ask that a mandatory additional daily and of a remuneration nature for each day actually worked.
They are also calling for a national campaign to be launched control and inspection aimed at regularizing work and pensions for the over 1.1 million paid domestic workers who currently perform tasks informally, as well as re-establishing the figure of “alleged domestic employer” established in 2013 and was repealed in 2016.
