The 1,800 engineers working for the Quebec government actually went on strike on Tuesday night after negotiations in Quebec broke down.
Another indefinite strike was called at 12:01 am by members of the Professional Association of Quebec Government Engineers (APIGQ).
APIGQ members left work for the first time, on April 23, but they delayed their strike after a month, to give the bargain a chance.
The conversation broke down early last night. The union president, Marc-André Martin, now believes he is in a disagreement. He insists the parties are nonetheless a hair width from an agreement in principle.
Compensation is at the heart of the dispute. APIGQ reported that its members have a large salary gap compared to engineers in other public sectors, such as municipalities.
Most of these engineers work in the Ministry of Transport, but also in the Environment. Others are distributed to various ministries.
