The motorcycle boom: sales grow for 19 consecutive months

The first quarter closed with a 30%increase.

Contrary to what is happening in the 0 km car market, sales of new motorcycles are going through a period of full growth. In fact, the the dealerships have had 19 consecutive months of improvement and short -term expectations indicate a positive trend to proceed.

The last time the market crashed was in August 2020, with 1,340 fewer units patented than in the same month last year. Since then, the balances have always been favorable, according to statistics from the National Directorate of Automotive Property Registries (Dnrpa),

The start of the year is also encouraging. In the first quarter, motorcycle dealers in Argentina sold 117,722 units, 30% more than in the first three months of last year.

Prices, stocks and credits

0 km cars and motorcycles are not direct competitors, but drawing a parallel between one market and another allows us to understand why is it so bad for the first and good for the last?

An important point is the prices. Cars have had a very strong increase in the past year. Throughout 2021 they even exceed general inflation, registering increases of between 65% and 70% (20 points above IPC). This year they have taken the same path and in just two months they already have adjustments close to 15%.

Motorcycles, on the other hand, are rising under inflation. If the ten best -selling models on the market are taken as a reference, according to Acara’s patent reports, it can be seen that increased with an average of 38% over the past twelve months.

In detail, Dnrpa’s price tables indicate that in April 2021 the ten most popular models were worth an average of $ 103,556 on their 0 km version. Today, both bikes have an average value of $ 142,901.

There was still no inflation data recorded at the time, but less than 50% per year could not be taken into account, considering the latest reports published by INDEC. Also salaries are around that range of sense, shows a relatively inexpensive of motorcycles in the country.

Another important factor is what determines stock levels. Automakers recognize that units are missing in almost every brand. Motorcycles also suffer from shortcomings, but the situation is less serious, because there are many more versions of national labor.

Finally, there are differences in financing options. There are some attractive alternatives to car dealerships, but the motor vehicle sector has the advantage that “My bike” programsponsored by the Government, together with the Chamber of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Cafam), the Association of Automotive Dealers of the Argentine Republic (Acara) and the Argentine Chamber of Motorcycle Dealers (Cadecom).

GOOD EXPECTATIVES

For the president of Acara, Ricardo Salomé, sales will continue to increasebeyond the problem of importing, both units and spare parts.

“It is noteworthy that the sale of motorcycles continues to grow and grow. More and more units are being sold because of the need for transportation, but they’re also looking middle part for trips and moving many kilometers ”he pointed out.

“For the acquisition of motor vehicles, funding continues to play a key role. It is therefore important to continue advancing, from across the sector and with the Government, the funding program of Banco Nación, Mi Moto, which mainly explains this trend. That will not stop in the short term, ”he added.

far from the maximum

Although the numbers are favorable, motorcycle sales are still up very far from the maximum reached Argentina.

If we take the first quarter of each year, it can be seen that the peak of sales was reached in 2018, when 206,757 new motorcycles hit the streets, 76% more than in 2022. This is about an extraordinary start to the yearwhich has little to do with the normal movement for the country.

The common thing, according to statistical data, is that between 100,000 and 120,000 0 km motorcycles are sold in the first three months of each season.
