Rental car prices skyrocket this summer. In question, an imbalance between supply and demand.

Renting a car during the summer holidays has never been so expensive. It takes an average of 524 euros this year, according to data from Carigami, a specialized price comparator. That is 110 euros more than last summer and 279 euros more than in 2019, reports the parisian.

This price increase is linked to an imbalance between supply and demand. Rental companies lack cars to offer tourists. Although some may not have anticipated the strong demand, this phenomenon is more related to the shortage of semiconductors and materials since the health crisis and the war in Ukraine.

Shortage of new vehicles.

Rental companies can no longer renew their fleet because manufacturers struggle to produce all the necessary vehicles. Not to mention that the latter are also reluctant to supply rental companies that order poorly equipped vehicles and in large quantities, lowering prices.

629 euros in Paris for a week

Renting a car for a week in summer does not cost the same depending on the region. Lyon is the city that has experienced the greatest growth. It takes about 574 euros for 7 days, or 59% more than last year.

Paris continues to be where it costs the most to rent, specifically 629 euros per week (+45%), side by side with Bordeaux, where you have to pay 604 euros (+38%).

Despite the sharp rise in prices, France remains in the low average compared to other countries. For example, a week of car rental in the United States costs 680 euros, 764 euros in Canada, 443 euros in Portugal, 445 euros in Spain and 659 euros in Italy.

According to the Carigami comparator, there will be no return to the prices we knew before the pandemic. On the one hand, supply problems will not be resolved soon and, on the other, the arrival of electric vehicles in rental fleets will help drive up prices.
