Purchasing power: fuel aid at the center of the debates that are opening in the National Assembly

The long-awaited purchasing power bill arrives this Monday at the floor of the National Assembly. On fuel, the proposals of the main opposition groups are far from the measures of the executive.

The government’s purchasing power bill and the finance reform project for 2022 arrive at the Assembly this Monday. On the discussion menu: the fuel aid proposed by the Executive but whose terms do not suit the opposition groups.

In fact, the government has decided to extend at least until the end of September the fuel discount of 18 cents (in mainland France), introduced from April 1. It will drop to 12 cents on October 1 and then to 6 cents on November 1, before ending on December 1.

To replace it, starting in October, a “fuel subsidy for workers” will be launched, subject to means, for employees who use their car to go to work. It will be between 100 and 300 euros, depending on the level of income and the distance traveled. The extension of the discount and compensation will cost 4.6 billion euros in 2022.

What are the opposition groups asking for?

But in the absence of an absolute majority, the 250 elected LaRem (renamed Renaissance), MoDem and Horizons are forced to find common ground with the opposition. And specifically with the 62 deputies who ask for the “lowering of the price of fuel to 1.5 euros per litre”. Out of discussion for the Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, who quantified such a drop in 50,000 million euros, judging it “not responsible”.

For its part, Nupes asks for a blockade at 1.40 euros per liter financed with a tax on the profits of oil companies. A measure again very far from the proposals made by the government.

Finally, Agrupación Nacional also denounces the “check policy” of the Executive and advocates a reduction of VAT to 5.5% instead of 20% on fuel.
