Purchasing power: Spain will make certain train connections free for 4 months

Spanish inflation broke records with +10.2% in June, a level not reached since 1985. Among the strong measures that the government will take to preserve the purchasing power of Spaniards: free train travel for 4 months from September (until December 31).

Not all trains will be affected. Free access must apply above all to workers and, therefore, to home-work travel.

Specifically, the measure will only apply to multi-trip tickets (at least 10) of Renfe Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia public services (equivalent to home-work trips and medium distance up to 300 kilometres). The measure excludes one-way or long-distance travel.

In June, the government had already reduced the price of metro, bus and tram tickets in Spain by 30%.

So many measures that will be financed by the exceptional tax on the extraordinary profits of large energy companies announced a few weeks ago. Enough to recover about “two billion euros” per year in 2023 and 2024, said the head of government.

It should be remembered that other countries have taken steps to provide almost free transport for mainly ecological purposes, notably in Germany, Austria with Climaticket, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

But this gratuity has its inconvenience with the risk of saturation of many trains as in Germany. The rail network must be able to expand. the spanish newspaper public he believes that “doubts” hover over this “state’s ability to increase frequencies and improve services.”
