Given the expected cut of Russian gas, it is time for energy sobriety. The European Commission on Wednesday asked the 27 European member states to voluntarily reduce their gas demand by 15% over the next eight months, to overcome the drop in Russian deliveries.
The plan presented by the European Commission, which will be discussed by the Member States, establishes that each country must “do everything possible” to reduce, between August 2022 and March 2023, its national gas consumption by at least 15%. with respect to the average consumption of the last 5 years in the same period.
Brussels is also proposing a mechanism setting “binding demand reduction targets” for the 27 in the event of “substantial risk of severe shortages”.
