The number of payment frauds fell 3.8% in 2021, but the average amount of damages increased by around 14% to 166 euros, the Banque de France said on Friday.
The total amount of fraud reached €1.24 billion in 2021, an increase of 8.5% with constant methodology and scope.
“The same thing happens with transfer fraud, where we have a little chill: it is a fraud that hits companies in particular with unit amounts that can be tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros”, although fortunately the cases are few, he continued. .
The check is the most fraudulent.
The check value fraud rate is thus 0.079%, that is, 79 euros defrauded per 100,000 euros paid by this means, while transfer fraud is 0.0007% (70 cents defrauded per 100,000 euros paid).
The card value fraud rate is 0.059%, but the unit amounts defrauded are lower. In addition, the development of strong authentication has made it possible to reach “an all-time low” in Internet payment fraud.
But the greater security of the means of payment leads fraudsters to use more and more manipulation techniques to induce the victim to make or validate the payments themselves, in particular by posing as their bank advisor.
“The development of these techniques, which we call + manipulation +, must not lead to a gray area with too long reimbursement times”, or even non-refund, warned the governor of the Banque de France, François Villeroy de Galhau, while UFC -That Choisir filed a complaint against twelve banks at the end of June for this issue.
