After Bruno Le Maire’s statement on Saturday in the Assembly, the scenario of a price at the pump, reduced to 1.50 euros per liter at the beginning of the school year, settles in people’s minds. But the calculation is not so simple.

The discount on the pump price established from April 1 could go from 18 cents to 30 euro cents (per liter) in September. This was declared on Saturday before the National Assembly by the Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire.

According to the schedule presented by the minister, the fuel price bonus could rise to 30 euro cents per liter in September and remain at the same level in October. It would then drop to 10 cents in November and December.

This suggests a return to prices of 1.50 euros per liter, that is, the ceiling requested by the Republicans (LR). “By accumulating the government discount and adding the help that the Total oil company makes of 20 cents, we reach a 50-cent reduction per liter of gasoline in September and October,” explained Pierre-Henri Dumont, LR deputy for Pas-de -Calais, on BFM TV, Saturday.

A disputed calculation

However, in the ranks of the opposition this calculation is widely questioned.

Before concluding: “You can’t add the two.” Not to mention that the calculations are made on the basis of current prices. However, fuel prices could very well rise in the coming weeks and months.

For Yves Carra, spokesman for the Automobile Club association, it is necessary to go further. “The price difference between some stations and supermarkets is 20 cents. So we already had the discount of 20 cents if we chose our station well, ”he began on our antenna. According to him, only a reduction in taxes on fuel will allow a lasting reduction in its price at the pump.

Finally, this type of measure does not seem to benefit motorists equally according to their standard of living. According to a note from the Council for Economic Analysis, the discount on the price of fuel of 18 cents implemented since April has benefited more wealthy motorists. Thanks to this boost, 18.50 euros were saved on average per month, compared to 9.50 euros for the most modest.
