The baguette is getting more and more expensive. According to INSEE, its price was 93 cents on average in France last June. Or 4 cents increase in a year. The BFM Business trolley also bears witness to this increase in supermarkets: this week, the price of the traditional baguette in our test drive was 89 cents, or a 6% increase compared to the previous week.
In spite of everything, the rising prices in the bakery are still under control, the president of the National Confederation of French Bakery-Pastry, Dominique Anract, assures BFM Business:
“It’s a ticking time bomb”
The price of baguettes is a marker of inflation, carefully studied by consumers. So to keep the price from rising too high, bakers are cutting their margins. But Dominique Anract fears that this will not be possible for long:
In these conditions, the national confederation of bakers asks the government for help, in particular so that the bakers can change their ovens. Because today, many still run on oil and gas.
