Due to high temperatures, “production restrictions are likely to affect the Tricastin nuclear production site from August 6, up to and including the closure of a unit,” EDF explained.

EDF could be forced to reduce its nuclear production in the coming days and even close a reactor at the Tricastin plant (Drôme) due to the high temperatures of the river, while France is going through a new heat wave.

“Due to forecasts of high temperatures in the Rhône, it is likely that production restrictions will affect the Tricastin nuclear production plant from August 6, 2022, possibly reaching the closure of a unit,” indicates the electricity producer. in a message intended for the markets. “However, it will be necessary to ensure a production of at least 400 MW with the maintenance of 2 sections coupled due to network limitations,” specifies the company. Tricastin has 4 reactors of 900 MW each.

EDF had already warned, since Friday, that the plant’s production could be affected by the heating of the rivers, used to cool the reactors. “To date, only Tricastin reactor number 2 has modulated its power to comply with its discharge order (twice for a few hours on July 29 and July 31),” said a spokesman on Tuesday afternoon. .

Possible restrictions in Saint-Alban and Golfech

EDF also warned of possible “production restrictions” at the Saint-Alban (Isère) power plant, also on the banks of the Rhône, although minimal production is also expected. Such restrictions are also being considered at the Golfech power plant (Tarn-et-Garonne) this time due to the high temperatures forecast for another river, the Garonne.

Each plant has its own regulatory water discharge temperature limits that must not be exceeded, so as not to heat the surrounding watercourses and protect the fauna and flora. In fact, power plants pump water to cool the reactors, before discharging it. The regulations provide for possible temporary exemptions at certain sites and such exemptions have recently been granted to four plants so that they can operate during very hot weather.
