Between August 2 and 8, most of the prices registered in our selection remain unchanged, a sign of an inflation that is marking time but that is not deflating either.

Absolute calm in prices in the middle of summer. Our BFM Business cart, a selection of 48 products among the 200 most purchased by French consumers, costs 137.68 euros this week, a modest increase of 21 cents compared to last week.

The price of milk breads on the rise

In detail, few products saw their price increase. The most significant increase is that observed in the Pasquier x10 milk rolls that are now sold at 1.36 euros compared to 1.25 euros last week. At the end of May, the same package cost 1.21 euros. That’s 15 cents less.

Another notable increase is that of toilet paper. The product we have selected is now sold at 1.87 euros compared to 1.85 euros last week. However, this product showed notable price stability (1.8 euros between the end of May and the end of July, before an initial increase).

Finally, the last reference to see its price increase, the pack of private label snack tiles, which went from 1.09 euros last week to 1.15 euros this week.

Our basket has changed slightly.

Please note that two household products included in our basket – Sanytol grapefruit disinfectant spray 500ml and Saint-Marc wipes x40 -, as well as the set of two Colgate Original toothpastes, are no longer sold by the distributor. In the last price release with these items, on July 25, our selection cost 140.44 euros. For this basket to be comparable to the last two weeks, we must subtract the three products that are no longer available. Excluding these three products, the bill then drops to 137.22 euros the previous week.

In the same way, our first price announcement made on May 11 goes from 144.59 euros to 137.61 euros, removing the three products.

no drop this week

On the other hand, no item saw its price fall, for the first time since mid-June. Thus, the traditional baguette, which had risen 5 cents last week, remains at the same price (89 cents). Similarly, President Gastronomic butter, whose price had dropped one cent last week, after a sharp rise, neither rose nor fell (2.26 euros).

Inflation reached an annual 6.1% in July, according to an initial estimate published at the end of July by INSEE. Although this is a record since 1985, inflation slowed for a month. Indeed, inflation reached +0.3% between June and July, after +0.7% in June (compared to May) and +0.7% in May (compared to April).
