The government refrains from banning private jets. Oliver Veran, guest of France Inter this TuesdayHe renewed the position already outlined by the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, this weekend.
He considered logical the public protest that has arisen in recent weeks, regarding the excessive use of jets by billionaires and other celebrities, from the business world to the entertainment world. Industrialist Vincent Bolloré, for example, had flown five space flights in a single day, simultaneously emitting the equivalent of nearly an entire year’s worth of CO2 emissions.
However, the government spokesman reiterated his intention not to touch the regulations relating to this mode of transport. He thus opposes environmentalist Julien Bayou, who explained that he wanted to introduce a bill to ban air travel.
In France, the European Commercial Aviation Association (EBAA) recorded 243,189 aircraft movements in France (departures and arrivals). This represents, to scale, half of the flights that pass through Paris-Charles de Gaulle each year, or approximately 5-10% of total domestic traffic. Aviation, for its part, represents 2.5% of global emissions.
carbon offset
Clément Beaune secured this weekend in the parisian wanting to put an end to behaviors “that no longer happen”, taking into account the ecological imperative.
But he also felt that the most effective way was to act on a European scale. A consultation should be opened with the Transport Ministers of the Continent. Olivier Véran considered that this “consultation may make sense”, in particular by supporting the use of carbon offsetting: but this method, criticized for its “greenwashing” tendencies, should only be dedicated to residual emissions, that is, incompressible.
