“There will be an increase in energy prices at the beginning of 2023, but it will be contained and reasonable compared to this worst case scenario,” says the minister in an interview with Ecos.

Bruno Le Maire estimates that “without the price shield”, the increase in gas and electricity prices could represent an average of 120 euros per month and per household in 2023, in an interview with Echoes.

“We will maintain devices to cushion energy prices”

Elisabeth Borne promised on Saturday that the executive “will not let energy prices skyrocket” for households, while the Economy Minister assured that the increase in electricity and gas will be “contained” in 2023.

Once the tariff shield ends at the end of 2022, “we will maintain devices to cushion energy prices”, while prices have skyrocketed in wholesale markets, “and we will take specific measures to support the most fragile”, said the President of the goverment .

The regulated gas rate was raised last fall but has since been frozen, while the electricity rate rose 4% in February.

In the wholesale market, prices have skyrocketed. Electricity prices for 2023 broke a record for France last week, reaching more than 1,000 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), up from around 85 euros per MWh a year ago.

Gas prices have also shot up in Europe, approaching historical records in recent weeks (345 euros per MWh in session).
