Baby dies after falling in storm in Spain

A 20-month-old girl died after a hail hit her head in a storm in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, yesterday. According to the Reuters news agency, the information was confirmed by local authorities today.

The boy was rescued, but died at the Trueta hospital in Girona. The incident recorded hailstones up to 10 centimeters in diameter that fell on an area around the village of La Bisbal d’Emporda.

In addition to the girl, at least 50 people were injured as a result of the storm. According to TV3, there were reports of bruises and even broken bones.

Musician Sicus Carbonell was on the scene when a storm hit a nearby hotel where his band was playing. He claims to have played on the terrace when he was forced to run and take cover. “People started screaming and hiding,” he told Reuters. “There was chaos with boys and girls running around alone. Some parents managed to catch their kids.”

According to Meteocat, Catalonia’s meteorological agency, the hailstones were the largest recorded hail in the region in the last two decades. A state of alert for storms has been maintained for this Wednesday (31).
