Executives at Warner Bros. are already reviewing. Discovery, the conglomerate that was born a week ago after the merger of entertainment giants WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc., into their various brands and they plan to change the course of the franchise film and television of its DC superheroes to strengthen the universe with its deliveries.

The news came days after the final signing of the agreement, which brought in David Zaslav, from Discovery, as the new CEO and launched the company’s restructuring, with several replacements to its officers.

The niche of superheroes

As reported by the expert site Variety, one of the first interests of Zaslav and his board of managers was to consolidate appropriate content with numbers visible on the big screen as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman etc –Arrow Flash– with its own series and stumble upon movies.

Superman, one of the strongholds of DC Comics.

It is that in the career that developed more than a decade ago in cinema of this genre, the Marvel saga with the Avengers and the endless characters linked to its ambitious narrative still remains at the top, both at the box office and to the followers, who are always left. the heroes of DC Comics in second place.

In this way, and although known as DCEU (“DC Extended Universe”) has some of the most classic and famous superheroes in its ranks and started its own franchise in 2013 with Man of Steel, until now it is still not managed. to align a set of proposals that are coherent and more attractive than its competitor.

In this regard, the belief within the company’s leadership is that, although titles like Aquaman (2018) and from Batman (2022), one of the mistakes is to leave the development of certain characters like Superman or not enough betting on examples like Joker (2019) o Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020), with Margot Robbie in the lead.

changing plans

The conglomerate’s promotion for this content will signal a change in plans developed by Warner Bros. Pictures Group at Warner Bros. Television until now, a year after the premiere of the 11th film in the saga, the suicide squad.

In that sense, it was also learned that shortly before the merger took place, Zaslav was investigating a list of candidates with experience working and caring for this type of tank, with the aim of finding someone who could fill the massive management role in all DC productions, a task that the famous Kevin Feige has been doing at Marvel since 2019.

One of the names that comes up is emma wattsa former high -ranking executive at 20th Century Fox and Paramount, because according to sources, the new CEO is more interested in getting someone more knowledgeable in business and marketing than the creative aspect to lead the area.

Meanwhile, among the various maneuvers they can perform in DC is the search to produce more content for streaming from their films, as happened in peacemaker (2022), the strip starring the antihero played by John Cena after his work the suicide squador in subsequent series about the Penguin character, played by Colin Farrell in the latest installment of Dark Knight.

On the other hand, it remains to be seen whether the change in perspective on these franchises will have an impact — and how it will be — on the productions they already have on their payroll for this year and next, with film planned as the sequel of ShazamOne second Aquamanthe third appearance of Wonder Woman and the beginning of Black Adaman antagonist from the comics to be played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

This is the first big news to come out after the merger of the same company, originally announced in May last year, formally separated WarnerMedia from AT&T’s orbit, although it would retain 71 percent of the conglomerate’s shareholding package.

For its part, Discovery Inc. agreed. to pay 43,000 million dollars in cash and suppose, through emerging Warner Bros. Discovery, another 43,000 million in debt.

The new signing will bring together a single space brand such as HBO, HBO Max, CNN, Warner Bros. studios, DC Films, New Line Cinema, TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network channels including Discovery Channel, HGTV, Discovery Home & Health, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, Turbo and Animal Planet, among others .
