There are those who do not tolerate the acting of Harry Styles, the musician. Palito Ortega did it here and it didn’t go badly. Inspired by the private life of EM Forster, the author of Mauritius Y Howard Mansion, the thing is like this: there is a love triangle. There’s Styles’ character, the title cop, Tom. Emma Corrin – Lady Di in the fourth season of The crown– is Marion, a modest girl in 1950s UK, and David Dawson is Patrick, a museum curator.
It’s not a ménage à trois, because when Marion discovers that her husband is having sex with Patrick, she doesn’t want to blame him. Or yes: she wants to set herself on fire.
my police it goes back and forth in time, in the past, which is the action that takes place in the 1950s, when Tom and Marion are young, they meet, he teaches her to swim, she coaches him a little because Tom, he assumes, he is not an educated boy, and in the present.
And this is where the film begins. Marion receives an ambulance at her house in which Patrick is transferred, who has had an epileptic attack and is confined to bed. She has decided to protect him and take care of him, before Tom’s refusal, that she doesn’t even want to see him. At first we don’t know why, because the question of infidelity -which should be the topic, whether Tom is homosexual or not, but the point is that Tom lies to his girlfriend and then to his wife- comes later, in one of the flashback.
So there they were, the retired cop, the retired teacher, and an invalid Patrick, a hard-to-recognize Rupert Everett.
And it is in the ambivalence that the film sinks. Screenplay by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia), which adapts the novel by Bethan Roberts, seems more genuine in the 1950s than in the present.
It is also the enthusiasm of the plot that makes us believe in the living room that there is an intrigue there, something we don’t know, or rather, that we haven’t been told yet. Because my police It’s the kind of film where nothing is left to the viewer’s feeling, rumination or meditation.
Directed by Michael Grandage (genius), Corrin is doing better than her male peers. Styles can act, but the scene where he has to tell his wife the truth can’t make us believe what he’s saying.
So things, my police sometimes it’s authentic – like the sex scenes between Tom and Patrick, whether in a bedroom, an alley or on the beach – but incredible at others.
Also, if the past actions take place in the 1950s, the characters must have been born in at least 1940. So in the present they must be over 80 years old. And no, it’s not like that, but you can see that the sea breeze, living by the sea, is rejuvenating.
